sun chips

This is an awesome billboard I found in the advertising annual for communication arts magazine. They use the shadows cast from the skewed type to display their product. They are using the sun in a clever way to convey that these chips are made using solar energy or heat. I think it is an awesome design because it is literally outside the box and the sign has a different look at different times of the day which adds alot of variety to a sign that people might get used to.
As a side note... what the eff is CBS doing here? trying to steal the spot light?

Click on this image to get the full appreciation. I got this image out of Communication Arts magazine. It is selling this line of pens in a fun way that shows that with this fine tip pen you can write on anything. All of the type is hand written except for on the pen which emphasises it somewhat even tho it is the smallest form in the picture. Im not going to go out and buy this pen but I really like this design simply because it is subtle and fun.

local found graphic design continued
Clocwork Orange: This movie poster gets its design elements both from the title and plot of the movie. It is an image that raises questions about the movie which is what the movie actually does also. The flat bright orange background is orange playing on the title which is strengthened by the clock cog that encampsulates the characters eye like an eyelash.
Give us your Organs God Is Watching YOU!!! This billboard is trying to get people to check the box on their license for organ donor by using an asymmetrical conceptual design. The heart which in this case looks like a medical diagram completes the slogan "We love organ donors". The way the billboard is split in half is asymetrical and high contrast. Just to the left of this billboard is a sort of World Peace sign that was cleverly placed Im guessing to emphasis morality and humanitywhich might lead one to donate organs!
Drunk driving: I love billboards in Champaign about Meth and Elder abuse... nothing is out of reach for these guys and this buzzed driving billboard is lumped in with those others. While trying to make a serious statement these billboards unintentially make many people laugh which can only help their cause. Thats the most I think I need to say... it works on the humors of those who probably drive buzzed. I could yak about sans serif type and how this is almost symmetrical and almost asymetrical but all that really doesnt matter in this case. Humor.
Jesus is sending angry birds to kill all of us sinners unless you buy a bible on this website or you can call toll free. But really, this is like being punched in the rods and cones that reside in your cornea, by jesus himself. Not only is it blue on yellow but the birds explode from the cross and alleluia has an exclaimation mark. Im not very religous but Id have to say this is one of the more tasteful JesusBoards Ive ever seen and I have seen alot having been in the South for the last 5 years.
What embodies the essence of greasy ass burgers and chicken than a diner like this one with all the red trim and cheap lettering. If you are feeling extra white trash there are lawn chairs out front to compliment your meal and cigarette and dont forget to bring the kids!
Local graphic design
Middle school or High School peer mediation: This simple design was found above a local school smack dab in the center above the main entrance. Its function is simple, to remind people that there is an opportunity to talk about problems between 2 or more people before it escalates in to some bad situation that makes the news. I have no idea what it is done with but the emphasis is on Peer mediation and Helping which gets the idea across very quickly and easily.
Radio Flyer: This image was taken about a block or two from Neil street. The logo on the wagon appears to fly right off of the wagon which implies speed. I am sure that at one time this design had many kids crying "Mommy PLEEEEASE can I have one" These days the radio flyer is almost and Icon of childrens toys from a time before video games.
Buhrmester: Nothing says stability like a plain 2 color symmetrical layout. I have no doubt this design was created with stable, reliable, management and professional in mind. Very simple, very straightforward and to the point, thats how these guys are projecting themselves to the public which is in an "economic crisis".

Murphy's napkin
St Patricks Day is coming up and I tried out a few of the local "Irish bars". I had planned on "aquiring" a glass with the best logo on it, but only came up with a napkin. This napkin isnt even that cool, but it is what you expect to see at most of the "Irish bars". The dominant colors are green and gold, the text is close to an old english on top of a clover. Its function as a beer napkin is to reinforce that you are in fact drinking at an Irish bar everytime you take a drink or when your drink gets low. This is like a bussiness card that you can get phone numbers on or other important information.
